The PLAIN Board of Directors

The PLAIN Board of Directors provides leadership and makes decisions on issues relevant to Plain Language Association International and its members. Members serve on the Board for the period between the international conferences. Representation is from as many countries as possible.

Dr. Deborah S. Bosley is an associate professor of English (technical writing), an international expert in the use of plain language, and Principal in The Plain Language Group. She has spent the past 20 years advocating for consumers and citizens by helping attorneys, corporations, government agencies, and non-profits create financial written information that is easy for people to understand and use.

Dr. Bosley has given more than 100 presentations in the U.S., Mexico, England, Spain, Ireland, Germany, and France. The author of three books and more than two dozen articles on issues related to clear communication, she was a panelist on Get Noticed: Writing Effective Financial Privacy Notices sponsored by the Federal Trade Commission, the Securities Exchange Commission, and The Federal Treasury, among others.

Her recent work includes helping public companies exceed the SEC requirements for plain language in proxy statements, Compensation and Disclosure Analysis, Management Disclosure Analysis, 10-Ks, and other financial documents. She also was an expert witness in two ERISA lawsuits to help determine if Summary Plan Descriptions met compliance requirements.

Ruth Baldwin has more than 20 years’ experiences as a writer, editor, trainer and promoter of clear language. Her company, Plain Writing Services, provides training, writing and editing services to government, NGOs, unions and the private sector.

Ruth is the author of the best-selling publication, Clear Language and Literacy, published by the Ontario Literacy Coalition in 1990, and the revised version published in 2000. She is also the co-author (with Sally McBeth) of The Clarity Kit: Effective Communications for Municipalities, a joint project of the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators and the Canadian Union of Public Employees. Her writing/editing projects have covered a wide variety of topics including health and safety, environmental assessment, local government issues, and international development.

Ruth is a member of the Plain Language Association InterNational (PLAIN) and has served as Treasurer since 2006. She is also a member of the Editors’ Association of Canada.

Nad Rosenberg is president and founder of TechWRITE, Inc., a company that creates high-quality, plain-language manuals and e-learning tutorials for a wide range of clients. Since TechWrite was started in 1985, its primary goal has been to make complicated technical information easy to understand. Plain language has always been the key to implementing this core value.

Before starting TechWRITE, Nad managed documentation departments for several large corporations. She is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, an Associate Fellow of the Society for Technical Communication, and a Past President of the Philadelphia Metro Chapter of the STC.

Sandra Fisher-Martins runs Português Claro, a training and consultancy firm that introduced plain language in Portugal and has been helping Portuguese companies and government agencies communicate clearly since 2007.

Sandra is particularly interested in the use of plain language and information design in public documents as a way of helping citizens make informed choices about their health, education, welfare, and civil rights. Her clients include the Government, Inland Revenue, Social Security, Caixa (Portugal’s largest bank) and ZON (telecommunications).

Sandra is the Portuguese representative for Clarity, an international association that promotes plain legal language. She is member of the board of PLAIN – Plain Language Association International – and a member of
IC Clear.

Sandra gave a TEDx talk in Porto in 2011 about 'The right to understand'. It was chosen as 'Editor's Pick' in October 2011 and put on the TED homepage. It currently has over 270 000 views.

Ron Wohl is a Certified Management Consultant and corporate Anthropologist who studies the communication of factual information in large organizations and introduces plain English to make the communication of management information effective and efficient. He supplies highly experienced plain English writers and graphic artist to these organizations and to the large consulting firms who advise them. Ron has over 40 years experience in management and communication, including 30 years as founder and president of In Plain English(R) a national consulting firm. Ron has been the president or director of several national and local professional and civic associations, as well as Chair of the Montgomery County, Maryland Commission on the Humanities, a national speaker on plain English applications, home-based business issues, and politics. Ron ran for the Maryland legislature in 1986, lost, but got a life. He has also written columns for two newspapers. He has co-authored the textbook on employee benefit communications and is currently working on a book on the future of the corporation where 4 & 5 generations are at work at the same time.

Robert Linsky, Information Design Doc, is the Director of Information Design at NEPS, LLC, a leading communications management consulting firm orchestrating information for relevant, personalized delivery. His expertise is in information design and document processes and he has been creating solutions for a wide range of nationally and internationally recognized financial, insurance, healthcare and telecommunications companies.

He has taught design and served as the chair of the design department at the New England School of Art & Design. Mr. Linsky served on the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts College of Art & Design for twelve years including two terms as its Chair.

As the executive director of ISGD (International Society of Graphic Designers, Ltd.), Robert led designers on Design Dialogues to Russia, China and Eastern Europe.

He is a life fellow of the Communications Research Institute and is on the editorial board of the Information Design Journal. Robert is a member of the International Institute for Information Design (IIID) and the Information Design Association. For the second year, he is serving as Director of Judging for the ClearMark Awards sponsored by the Center for Plain Language.
