Applications
One way in which conditions can differ is simply in the application of the design.
It is probable that each application requires a different reading strategy. As a result, the
demands made of a design are different for each application. In the design of a text book, for
instance, it will be very important that the text is transparent and highly legible. Billboards, on
the other hand, have to be conspicuous first and should allow a high reading speed;
comprehension is not fundamental, as long as the brand name sticks. Different again are the
requirements when designing forms. Readability is most important here. Both the message
content and textual organization have to support comprehensibility. At the same time, the
reader needs clear cues on when, where and how to respond to questions. Logotype, finally,
should clearly be congenial with the image of the institution it represents, whereas legibility is
sometimes hardly a concern for this application.
